Because
You've Got Better Things to do than Maintain
your Yard!
Low
Maintenance Landscaping for the Barnegat Bay Watershed is a guidebook
developed specifically for residents of the Barnegat
Bay watershed and Ocean
County's environment and conditions. Sandy and porous
soils, salty air, and
variable weather conditions all play an important role
in determining the
make-up and maintenance needs of the home yard and landscape.
This
comprehensive guidebook follows 8 simple and effective
horticultural
techniques and methods which will help you establish
your own low
maintenance landscape. Which grass seed is most appropriate
for our soil?
How often and how much should I fertilize? How can I
keep my soil and my
plants healthy? Where do I get my soil tested? Which
flowers and shrubs are
best suited to my yard? The answers to these - and many
more- questions are
in this simple to follow manual. Establish a low maintenance
landscape - and
have more time to enjoy your yard! Click

A cooperative effort brought to you by the Ocean County
Soil Conservation
District, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County
and the Barnegat Bay
National Estuary Program with support from the Ocean
County Planning
Department and the Board of Chosen Freeholders. The newly
released second
edition is available on-line, or as a hard copy, at any
of the partner
agencies. The original guidebook was compiled with input
and expertise from

INTRODUCING “DISCOVERING BARNEGAT BAY”
Discovering
Barnegat Bay is a new publication created for educators.
It is a 340-page interdisciplinary guide that addresses
the historical, cultural, and natural resources of the
Barnegat Bay watershed. The guidebook was a cooperative
effort between OCSCD and members of the Barnegat Bay
Watershed Environmental Educators Roundtable. Discovering
Barnegat Bay will be introduced to educators and will
be available for purchase at a series of workshops scheduled
for various host locations in Ocean County. Don’t
miss out on this exciting opportunity for you and your
students. For more information, click here.
Sub-aqueous Vegetation Sediment Classification System
and Mapping Study
The Sub-aqueous Vegetation(SAV)Sediment Classification
System and Mapping
Study for the Barnegat Bay, prepared by The Ocean County
Soil Conservation District, in Cooperation with the USDA
- Natural Resources Conservation Service, was conducted
to determine if a relationship exists between bottom sediment
and SAV. It is hoped that any such possible correlation
would help to explain the cause of the loss of SAV beds
that has occurred during the past forty years and would
suggest actions to restore SAV prior levels. Click

Impact of Soil Disturbance During Construction on Bulk
Density and Infiltration in Ocean County, New Jersey
A
study was conducted of undisturbed and disturbed urban
soils in Ocean County, New Jersey, to investigate the
impact on soil infiltration rates due to modification
and compaction during construction operations, to examine
if the effects are significant enough to alter the Hydrologic
Soil Group (HSG) classification or Runoff Curve Number,
and to provide additional guidance in the use of TR-55
for the design of structural stormwater management practices.

New Jersey State Standards for Soil Erosion and Sediment
Control
The sixth edition of the Standards is now available,
developed by the NJDA-State Soil Conservation Committee,
and published by the New Jersey Association of Conservation
Districts.
Since the establishment of the Soil Erosion and Sediment
Control Act of 1975, the State Soil Conservation Committee
has striven to develop and maintain technical standards
and guidance to insure that soil, water and related natural
resources are managed during development in a manner that
prevents or minimizes soil loss and related environmental
damage. These Standards provide the technical basis
for the control of soil erosion and sedimentation and
for the certification of such plans by soil conservation
districts as required by the above-mentioned Act.
The cost of the Standards is $35.00, and can be purchased
at our Forked River office or mailed. If you
send a mail order, include your name, complete mailing
address, and check for $41.00 (includes $6.00 for shipping
and handling), payable to Ocean County SCD.
Technical
Release 55 (TR-55): Urban Hydrology for Small Watersheds
TR-55, prepared by USDA-Natural
Resource Conservation Service, presents simplified
procedures to calculate storm runoff volume, peak rate
of discharge, hydrographs, and storage volumes required
for floodwater reservoirs. The cost
of TR-55 is $16.00. You can purchase
TR-55 at our Forked River office or mail your request. If
you send a mail order, include your name, complete
mailing address, and check for $21.00 (includes $5.00
for shipping) payable to Ocean County SCD.

Soil
Survey of Ocean County
This is a publication of the USDA-Natural Resource
Conservation Service, in cooperation with the New Jersey
Agricultural Experiment Station, Cook College at Rutgers
University, and the NJDA-State Soil Conservation Committee. Soil
properties that affect land use are described, broad
areas of soils are shown on the general soil map, and
the location of each kind of soil is shown on detailed
soil maps. The Ocean
County Soil Survey is available online in PDF
format at the USDA
website.
Low
Maintenance Landscaping for the Barnegat Bay Watershed:
A Guide for Ocean County Homeowners
This guide was
made possible by a grant from the NJ Department of Environmental
Protection, and was published
by OCSCD, in cooperation with Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
The guide describes effective
horticultural practices that can be used by homeowners
to save time and money on landscaping.
It illustrates the connection between low maintenance
landscaping and the reduction of nonpoint source pollutants,
such as fertilizers and pesticides, and also how the
reduction in water consumption helps to preserve the
aquifers that sustain Barnegat Bay and Ocean County's
wetlands, native plants, and wildlife.
Understanding
Rainfall and Runoff Relationships
This publication was prepared and published by OCSCD
for the purpose of illustrating the significance of rainfall
volume and the impact of rainwater runoff, and includes
tables and statistics specific to Ocean County.
Barnegat
Bay Brochure
This brochure was prepared by OCSCD with
the aid of a grant from the NJ Department of Environmental
Protection. It provides basic information about
the Barnegat Bay watershed and an overview of what is
necessary to maintain water quality within the watershed.
It is also available at Ocean County libraries, nature
centers, municipal and county offices, marinas, and is
distributed at various public events throughout the year.
The
Barnegat Bay Watershed Educational Resource Guide
Funding for this resource guide was provided
by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the NJ
Department of Environmental Protection. It
began as a simple directory and has grown into an annotated
compendium of resources and organizations offering numerous
programs, publications, field trips and watershed information
that educators can incorporate into their lessons and
activities. View the Barnegat Bay Watershed
Educational Resource Guide.
